It comes around once every four years… Leap Day! It’s a bonus day in February to cross things off your to-do list, seize the day, and all that stuff. However, THIS year Leap Day fell on a weekend, which means a bonus day to waste time. What did I do on this glorious, sunny day with the promise of spring in the air? DRINK BEER!!!
St. Louis has always been a giant in the American beer industry. In these days of the craft beer boom, that status remains unchanged. There are countless breweries and brewpubs in the greater St. Louis area creating innovative and delicious beer. It truly is a great place for a weekend adventure.
On Leap Day 2020, three St. Charles county beer stops collaborated to host a Beer Leap. By stopping at Two Plumbers Brewery and Arcade, Third Wheel Brewing, and Beer Sauce Shop and enjoying a pint or a flight at each, you could earn a limited edition pub glass and have fun drinking tasty beer. We figured it’s a great day to leap around town so… why not?
We started our day with morning beer at Two Plumbers Brewery and Arcade. This St. Charles brewery is decorated with cool video game theming and a room full of vintage arcade games and pinball machines.
Armed with a roll of quarters, we sipped a chocolate orange stout and a red IPA while playing some of our old favorite games. (I am sadly quite rusty at the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game!) Two Plumbers is a great place to hang out with a group of friends or have a fun retro date night. Though they don’t have a lot of food to offer, you can bring in your own food from the local restaurants in the area, or order a St. Louis style pizza from their kitchen.
Next, we leapt over to Beer Sauce Shop in St. Peters. This spot is not a brewery, but rather a curator of hundreds of craft beers, small batch whiskies, BBQ sauce and accessories, hot sauces and rubs. The shop also offers a menu of BBQ and sandwiches to enjoy with your drink.
On tap, we found a really awesome selections of IPA’s. In fact, we found enough we liked that we decided on two flights rather than just a pint. The two flights were great and we will definitely come back to the shop to try more beer and some whisky too!
Our final leap took us to Third Wheel Brewing, which is one of our favorite brewpubs in greater St. Louis. Every beer they make here is excellent… my favorite is the No Pun IPA. (And the Bourbon Barrel Boss which is rarely around, but is dangerously strong and delicious.) We also love the food from the in-house kitchen called The Window. I highly recommend the Grilled Cheese, made with Mister Meowski’s Sourdough, and the chicharrones.
The Beer Leap was a fun way to support local and enjoy our bonus day in 2020. The STL food and drink scene is doing great things. I am so glad to live in a city with such creativity, talent, and just plain fun.
