Trying New Things: Big Fig Mattress

Sleep is a wonderful thing, isn’t it? I mean, I love taking a nap, but nothing beats curling up in bed at the end of a long day. One of the best ways we can take care of ourselves is to ensure that we get restful, and renewing, sleep each night. But, finding the perfect conditions for that sleep can sometimes be difficult… especially as a Plus Size sleeper. It’s difficult to get adequate rest when sleeping on a mattress that sags and and a box spring that squeaks and moves every time you turn in the bed. Add a Plus Size partner to the bed and it makes the mattress twice as crummy.

For over a year, I have seen Plus Size influencers talking about the Big Fig Mattress. The Big Fig is a premium, mail-order mattress, designed specifically with the fuller figured sleeper in mind… Hence the name, Big Fig(ure). In fact, it is designed to support up to 1,100 lbs! The company has put a lot of thought, research, and testing into creating a mattress that addresses most complaints from Plus Size sleepers. Mattress sag, wiggly materials, squeaky foundations, and overheating in the night are a thing of the past.

The Big Fig Mattress is created with ThermoGel fabric and features a perforated foam that allows airflow through the mattress, keeping you cool while sleeping. It has 50% more coils than the average mattress and 18, 2.5 inch wide slats and double center rails in the foundation to support 5 times the weight of a standard bed. (The foundation is included with the purchase of the mattress.) The mattress and the foundation work in tandem to provide support which helps the materials last a long time. Both are constructed in a way that allow for great, body positive sleep; they come with a 120 night trial and a worry-free 20 year warranty.

We owned our previous mattress for ten years. It was great in the beginning, but was definitely showing its age. To be frank… so are we! Being over weight and over forty brings interesting new aches to your body. Add to that the fact that I was in a collision years ago that has left me with lingering joint problems, and a new sleep solution was desperately needed. So, during their President’s Day Sale, we decided to take a chance on the Big Fig Mattress.

Shipping was really fast… just three days. It came in two separate boxes, including the mattress (coiled up) and the foundation (made of wood). Note to those purchasing it in the future… That mattress box is HEAVY!! They seriously aren’t kidding when they say you will need help to move it.

The foundation setup was quite simple. With easy to follow directions, and tool free assembly, it took us less that 15 minutes to set it up. (Careful of the splinters!) Setting up the mattress was just a tiny bit more challenging. The company provided a cutting tool to open the plastic carefully. Apparently, I was a little too enthusiastic and punctured the second layer before we had the mattress in position. It began to expand quickly… however, it was just a minor issue. After a couple of hours, the mattress was expanded, acclimated and ready for sleep.

So, after a week of sleeping on the Big Fig, what do we think?

I LOVE it! The mattress is quite firm, which is how I prefer to sleep. The top layer is soft and bouncy, creating a comforting surface area for sleep. There is no squeaking or shifting when one of us adjusts sleeping position… actually, I cannot even feel my husband move anymore. The lack of sag makes the bed much easier to get in and out of. And even though it is freezing outside, the two of us (plus our 15 pound hot water bottle of a dachshund) tend to sleep a little hot. I have not noticed the Big Fig mattress holding in any of that heat at all.

My back and hips feel much better now too. I can already tell a big difference in my range of motion in the morning. I am really looking forward to seeing what effect it holds over a longer period of time.

I can tell you the Big Fig is well worth the money! Take it from me… your sleep will be much more peaceful and refreshing. This is worth the investment.
